Event medical coverage includes public safety and emergency planning. This has been brought into sharp focus in the past two decades with the increase in events and event size. The more frequent occurrence of extreme weather conditions and the advent of terrorism are particular risks for mass participation events and must be taken into consideration for the safety of the event and the larger concern of public safety.
Contingency planning must be part of medical preparedness and is done in conjunction with community agencies such as police, fire, and public works departments. It may be necessary to change the start and finish times of an event due to inclement weather
